Asikainen Training Camp Notes
¨Idi¨ Amin Asikainen has been in training camp for about six weeks, and according to trainer Pekka Mäki, the four-time European middleweight champion is ahead of schedule: “I wish the fight was this Saturday. I’m going to bring him down now even though there’s still three weeks to go before the fight. That’s how ready he is” . . . It was nearly 15 years ago when Mäki began his first tour of duty as Asikainen’s trainer. What is different between the Asikaien then and now? “I don’t see any difference. Still the same speed and he works just as hard. Amin is wise and he uses his knowledge to the fullest. I guess some people, as they get experienced they find it harder to have goals. He’s not like that. He always sets goals for himself” . . . Asikainen at the moment is training in Kisakeskus sports center in Pohja, Finland. And it’s going 10 rounds everyday with Russian Supermiddleweight Champion Kostantin Piternov and Russian world rated Gennady Martirosyan, will end sparring about two more weeks. Team Asikainen, headed by Trainer Pekka Mäki and Amin Asikainen will arrive in Manchester, England on September 22nd at 9.35 a.m.
LAURI-TOLPPOLA HEATS UP
European Union super lightweight champion Giuseppe Lauri (47-6, 28 KOs) defends his title against the hometown hero Juho “TNT” Tolppola (22-5-1, 9 KOs) May 30 in Helsinki, Finland on the undercard of WBA world heavyweight titlefight between Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev. Things heated up, when Lauri send Tolppola a public message from his training camp. The challenger did not like the words of Lauri.
The Italian champion is confident of victory. “Tolppola is 0-3 against Italian boxers. We are too good for him. After May 30 he will be 0-4 against Italians. My countryman Michele Di Rocco beat Tolppola in 2007 in Finland and later that year I took the title from Di Ricco. I see no reason why I would not be successful in Finland” Lauri comments.
Two time European title challenger Juho Tolppola fought very well in December 2008 against European champion Gianluca Branco in Italy, but was controversially stopped on a swelling in the side of Tolppola´s head in round nine. “I was robbed in Italy. I beat Branco and I should right now be European champion”. Tolppola is very determined to get a win over Lauri May 30. “I don´t like what Lauri is saying. I don´t want only to take his title, I really want to beat him up bad and shut him up” Tolppola states.
Tolppola is currently training for the titlefight in Helsinki. Tolppola´s main-sparring partner is unbeaten Russian prospect Denis Shafikov (19-0, 10 KOs), who will also be fighting on May 30 card. “Shafikov is much better boxer than Lauri. We are having really tough sparring sessions. I am in the best shape of my life and ready to kick some Italian ass” Tolppola informs.
Both boxers have stated that after the May 30 fight they want to go after the European super lightweight title. Lauri is currently ranked #3 by European Boxing Union (EBU), while Tolppola is ranked #6.

HELENIUS TO TAKE ON SCOTT GAMMER MAY 30
Scandinavian heavyweight hopeful Robert Helenius (7-0, 3 KOs) will face the biggest test of his career when he takes on Scott “The Hammer” Gammer on the undercard of the hotly-anticipated WBA heavyweight title fight between Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev. The “Nordic Nightmare” confirmed his great shape with a spectacular second-round TKO victory over Ozcan Cetankaya last weekend, dusting his opponent with a huge right uppercut in the first and then again with a big right in the second.
Helenius, a silver-medallist at the 2006 European Amateur Championships, is now looking forward to a “tough challenge” at Hartwall Arena on May 30. “I am thrilled to be fighting in front of my home fans,” said the 25-year-old, who was born in Sweden and raised in Finland. “Gammer is a difficult opponent but I will defeat him. I want to show the Scandinavian public what I have learned during the one year with Sauerland Event.”
Gammer (18-3, 9 KOs) is well-known not only in Great Britain but all over Europe. He came close to winning the EU heavyweight title last August but a hand injury forced him to retire in the eighth round against Francesco Pianeta. “Gammer is certainly the most difficult opponent Robert has ever been in the ring with,” Sauerland Event sports director Hagen Doering said. “But we have been very pleased with his development, so it is time to take the next step. With the support of his home fans, he will definitely beat Gammer. Robert is a potential champion and he will prove that in Helsinki on May 30.”

VALUEV TO DEFEND WBA HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST CHAGAEV IN FINLAND
Helsinki´s Hartwall-Arena will host the first-ever heavyweight title fight on Finnish soil when WBA champion Nikolai Valuev takes on Ruslan Chagaev in an eagerly anticipated rematch on May 30. The Russian Giant (50-1, 34 KOs) is determined to avenge the only loss of his career. “The day has come to settle the score,” Valuev said. “I have been waiting for two years to make amends. Only a victory over Chagaev can put my mind at rest.”
To this day, Chagaev is the only person ever to have beaten the Russian Giant, who has won all of his four fights since their meeting in April 2007. “I know everything there is to know about Chagaev,” Valuev said. “This is the fourth time I am actually preparing for a fight with him.” Last summer, Chagaev twice pulled out of scheduled rematches due to injury problems, which prompted the WBA to vacate the title. Valuev defeated John Ruiz in August to become the new WBA heavyweight champion, while Chagaev has been listed as “champion in recess” ever since. “Now is the time to end all this confusion,” Valuev said. “There will only be one WBA heavyweight champion after May 30 – and that will be me.”
The local promoter of the event will be Tailor Events in cooperation with Live Nation and Pekka Maki´s P3 Boxing. Ticket sales will start on May 4 through Eventim.
